natesebooknewsAmazon is set to introduce a new line of premium kindle devices. The interesting part about this news story is that the focus is set to be on battery power:

From the Wall Street Journal:

“In a first for the Seattle online retailer, Amazon will soon sell a higher-end Kindle with a rechargeable protective case for extended battery life, according to a person familiar with the matter. This removable cover will allow the Kindle to be thinner than earlier devices.”

A lot of reports covering this news story cast doubts of battery life as selling point for a device that already lasts weeks on a single charge. It is however quite plausible that the new Kindle could be thinner than even the thinnest device currently available. One compromise when going thinner is a thinner battery and ultimately much less battery life. A battery in the removable cover would fix that problem.

It is also rare for Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos to publicly hint at a new product. This could also be a sign that this could be more than just a newer thinner lighter kindle:

“Amazon’s chief executive, Jeff Bezos, said Monday on Twitter that an “all-new, top of the line Kindle” is almost ready, and promised the company would reveal details next week.”

It looks like a potential game changer for the ebook reader category. Interestingly it has also led to price cuts in existing Kindle products, most likely in a bid to clear out inventory. There are no indications of price or sizes.
